French Sardine and Potato Casserole

  • 3 potatoes, cleaned and cut into strips
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 onion, cleaned and cut
  • 20g butter
  • 2 cans of sardines in olive oil (125g each)
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup (250ml) fat-free cream
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 100g Swiss cheese, grated




  1. Boil the potatoes until soft. Add salt to taste.
  2. In a frying pan, heat the butter and fry the onion until golden.
  3. Preheat the oven to 180°C (356°F) and place a shallow ceramic casserole dish in it to warm.
  4. Grease the casserole dish with butter.
  5. Place half of the boiled potatoes in the dish, spreading them evenly.
  6. Add the fried onion on top of the potatoes.
  7. Lightly knead the sardines and place them over the onion.
  8. Add the remaining potatoes on top.
  9. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, fat-free cream, salt, and black pepper.
  10. Pour the egg mixture over the potatoes in the casserole dish.
  11. Sprinkle the grated Swiss cheese on top.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven until the cheese is melted and golden brown, about 20-25 minutes.
